What Bad Sandals Can Do To Your Back
With the weather getting nicer, it is time to start thinking about new footwear. Sandals are usually appropriate for this time of year but need special consideration.
Most shoes can be fixed to work properly and support your body or keep it from going funky, most sandals CANNOT. They actually make your body go funky.
Here are some pictures of a person barefoot (but treated with Advanced BioStructural Correction™) and then with sandals on. The instructions she was given prior to both pictures was to breath in, let it out and let your body slump.
Notice the way the shoulders round more and her head goes forward with the sandals? That will eventually make the body breakdown by forcing bones out of place in a direction the body cannot self-correct.
The reason it is not self-correcting is because there are no muscles aligned to pull the bones back from the out-of-place positions the body has forced them into.
Getting sandals that support you can save you money, time, effort AND PAIN!
In sandals, just like shoes, the arch area is VERY important. If you wear IMPROPER sandals then your body will be forced to lean forward, bones will be forced out of place in a direction your body cannot self-correct and you will not feel as good – or worse, hurt.
Patients come in all spring and summer wearing sandals made to mould to your feet. They are leather over a cork base – I am sure you know the type (see picture above). These literally fill my waste basket as my patients test them after getting adjusted. They throw them out because they would rather go home barefoot than have their body ruined.
Two things are wrong with these sandals. One is that they have an arch support and the other is the depression where the heel sits making the heel lower than the toes. This is called a "negative heel".
Both of these things, the arch support and the negative heel, accelerate the body into a forward leaning position.

Noticing what these sandals are doing to the rest of their body is why the patients themselves usually toss them into the wastebasket.
Good Sandals are Hard to Find
What makes a "good sandal"? A flat bottom is the main thing. This does not mean no heels. 1 to 2 inche heels are good for you. It does mean the part under your foot is flat without an arch support

Some people buy several pairs of the cheap $3 sandals in the colors they want because they have discovered that they are better for the feet and body until they wear out under the heel and you get the negative heel effect.
It is cheaper to by 10 pair at $3, use them and throw them out as soon as the heel starts to wear out then to pay for a visit to the office. This is the perfect excuse to buy a whole collection (though not of the expensive ones).
Many patients are finding that the large discount shoe places have the better inexpensive sandals.
Case history – Patient Who Drives 200 Miles Per Day
This patient's story is presented to demonstrate the power of sitting correctly.
A 50 year old man came to me because of severe muscle spasms in his neck and upper back and pain in these areas. He is a construction contractor who would drive 100 miles each way, to and from his work site, every day.
When feeling his muscles it was hard to tell them from the bones because they were so rigid. He said he had been this way constantly for 20 years.
He would feel better after being adjusted but it would only last an hour or two. I got him sitting on a firm seat wedge for his drive but he still complained of the pain. He would see me a second time each day on his way home and would get some relief again. This pattern continued for 3 months with him still getting temporary relief even though the muscles in his neck and back were a lot more relaxed than when he first started.
I was at a loss to understand why he was still in pain. Out of desperation one day, I walked out to look at his car seat because I knew the drive was bothering him.
I saw the seat cushion he was supposed to be using on the OTHER seat!
He told me that he was not using it because it felt too hard. I gently (ha!) advised him that he would probably feel much better if he were to USE IT.
The next time I saw him he told me that this was the best he has felt in years. He continued to improve normally after this.
There are important things to understand from this...
